- Most table lamps and some floor lamps have a harp attached to it just below the socket. The Lampshade then rests upon the harp, with a finial screwed onto the top to hold the lampshade in place. Harps come without the bottom bracket unless it is requested. To choose the correct size harp, Here are a few useful tips/ 1. Harps are normally 1 1/2 to 2 inches shorter then the side slant measurement of the lampshade. 2. The larger the shade the bigger the difference in harp and slant sizes 3. Coolie shade create a larger difference in harp size and slant. 4. To be on the safe side, you might want to buy a riser just in case you have purchased a harp a little to small. 5.
